the former cia director general david petreaus. >> the investigation now involving general john allen who replaced petreaus as the top american commander in afghanistan and last night the fbi searched the north carolina home of paula broadwell with whom petreaus had an affair. tara mergener has the latest. >> reporter: ordering a pentagon investigation of one of the nation's highest profile u.s. military officials. general john allen, the man who succeeded david petreaus as head of the international forces in afghanistan is linked to the investigation involving his predecessor. secretary of defense leon panetta says the fbi has turned the case over to department of defense investigators. the senior u.s. defense official says the inquiry centers around potentially inappropriate e-mails with jill kelley, the florida woman who sparked an investigation that led to petreaus' resignation as head of the cia. >> if you know my sister like i said, she is a dedicated mother and wife. >> reporter: kelley went to the fbi when she received threatening e-mails from an anonymous source. those

on the personal scandals that have developed. petraeus and afghan war commander john allen, from nbc's andrea mitchell, who broke this story. >> reporter: at his news conference, the president went outs of his way to praise petraeus. >> he has provided this country an extraordinary service. we are safer because of the work that dave petraeus has done. >> reporter: as paula broadwell remained in washington staying with her brother and still not talking, officials say the investigation was triggered in may when general john allen received an e-mail from an account called kelleypatrol. sources close to kelley say it warned the general to stay away from her, that she could ruin him. general allen says people close to jill kelley forwarded it to her on the account she shares with her husband, scott, thinking she had sent it as a joke. sources close to kelley said she had told general allen she had not sent it but was concerned she was being stalked or electronically hacked because the e-mail referred to a meeting she and general allen had scheduled in washington for the following week. in june, pe

, and now general john allen is involved over his correspondence with the original woman, jill kelley. all sounds a little confusing, it is. let's get right to nbc's andrea mitchell who can help us sort it out. andrea, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. it is confusing. yet another military general drawn into an fbi investigation that prompted the resignation of cia director david petraeus. marine general john allen replaced david petraeus as commander in afghanistan last year, but allen has now been caught up in the fbi probe that led to petraeus' resignation as cia director. overnight the pentagon announced allen's nomination to be commander of nato has been delayed and the nomination of his successor in afghanistan speeded up. after military officials announced that 20,000 to 30,000 pages of potentially inappropriate e-mails connected allen to jill kelley, the woman who had first complained to the fbi about harassing e-mails traced to paula broadwell, petraeus' biographer and acknowledged mistress. allen, who is married, denies any wrongdoing, and for now remains commander
in silicon valley, but this morning, john mcafee is on the run in belize. he is a person of interest in the death of his neighbor. he lives next door to mcafee. mcafee called "wired" magazine saying they have a vendetta against him. under no circumstances will i talk to the police in this country. you can say i'm paranoid about it, but they will kill me. there is no question. unrelated to the investigation and before he went on the run, mcafee told a belize tv station he hired personal security for his home. >> i can go out at night. yeah, i hire off-duty officers. who wouldn't in my position? i have an officer living on my compound. it makes me feel safe. >> mcafee was first in trouble with the law in april when the police confiscated guns from his home. >>> a total of four people in custody after a shooting in menlo park. the scene leaving neighbors concerned. this happened yesterday before noon. investigators say while making that arrest, they stumbled upon a cache of guns and shell casings. menlo park has been a neighborhood which has experienced an uptick in violence. >> my conc
